Helsinki, 5 degrees
Don't tell me the sky is the limit, there are footprints on the moon!
I spent this morning in rainy Helsinki taking a stroll from my office with two colleagues to go to the press conference and see the construction of the coming heart of
World Design Capital Helsinki 2012, the wooden
Pavilion that is. The Pavilion will be an open-to-all space between the
Museum of Finnish Architecture and the
Design Museum where you can truly experience the WDC Helsinki 2012 year events. The Pavilion will be open for the public starting from the 12th of May, and that is really soon!
Let me take you with me to the construction site...
(Tähän keskelle aukeaa 12.5. Paviljonki=here in the middle the Pavilion will open on the 12th of May)
As you probably noticed, the Pavilion, designed at Aalto University's Wood Program, is a showcase of Finnish sustainable wood architecture. I think it already looks stunning! It definitely shows how one can leave a low environmental footprint and use wood in an interesting way!
The architecture is based on the winning design of Pyry-Pekka Kantonen selected in the spring of 2011 and set between the two museums that I mentioned in the beginning of this blog post.
The most amazing thing about the Pavilion is that it's going to be an open space that everybody can visit for free! It will be open for 105 days during which it will have free programs on a daily basis! Once again, I'm genuinly proud of being a Helsinkian! Have you heard about this wooden structure before?
What's your opinion?
