I prefer rain -sometimes I feel sunlight will turn me to stone - perhaps I'm a Troll.

This week the Nordic libraries are celebrating mythological creatures, also known as trolls. Up here in the North we have many stories about these creatures, so I think it's delightful that they are remembered in the way they should be! I remember when I was little, I had many friends who thought they had seen trolls and gnomes in the forests, so it was quite common to believe in such things as children. Trolls have their roots in Nordic mythology and already in the 13th century there was talk about them here in the North. There are many sayings about trolls as well, so they have left their mark in the Nordic languages. We all know the stories about Karius and Bactus, the tooth trolls. My mother used to sing this lullaby to me as a child about trolls. The most well known Finnish trolls are of course the Moomintrolls, but I have already written about them in earlier blog posts here, here, here and here. Long live Nordic cohesion! If you haven't heard anything about Nordic folklore, have a good read here!

Mielestäni viikon aihe on ihana koska rakastan peikkotarinoita.

Are you familiar with these creatures? What kind of stories have you heard about them?

Minkälaisia peikkotarinoita olet kuullut lapsena? Mikä on suhteesi peikkoihin?

What's your opinion?

  2. what an interesting post! I didn't actually know those teeth creatures were trolls! although Estonian children know about their existence. overall I think in Estonia trolls are not very popular. still, a great post, Elisabeth!
