Falling Light

Helsinki, 6 degrees

We can easily forgive a child who is afraid of the dark; the real tragedy of life is when men are afraid of the light.

You might remember my earlier blog post about the Finnish environmental artist Kaarina Kaikkonen. No wonder that I also fell in love with her newest piece of art at the Finnish National Art Gallery Ateneum. So let me introduce them to you in this blog post.

Muistat varmasti aikaisemman blogikirjoitukseni kotimaisesta tilataidetaiteilijasta Kaarina Kaikkosesta.

Kaikkonen’s two most recent works, Falling Light and Blooming Spirit, discuss a topic that is central to all life – light. Light has had many symbolic meanings throughout the history of art. It is associated with religion, with nature's natural seasonal cycle, and even the ups and downs of human existence.

Falling Light, which is on display above the courtyard of the National Art Gallery Ateneum, and Blooming Spirit that is installed outdoors in the park by Keskuskatu street, are both independent works but they share a thematic link. The piece of art that is set outdoors is reaching out towards spring, while the installation in the courtyard has a touch of darkness to it. My favorite is Falling Light - I could have stayed and looked at it for a lifetime! I think it's genius to set the artwork on the courtyard, above the museum shop. It really made the space come to life! Despite the fact that there is no wind on the courtyard, as there was in Kaikkonen's previous work that I introduced in my earlier blog post, I felt there was a lovely flow in the piece of art. Kaikkonen sure does have a talent - she's one of my favorite artists for sure!

Ateneumin sisäpihalla sijaitseva Valon paino ja ulkona oleva, Keskuskadun puoleisessa puistikossa sijaitseva, Kasvun henki ovat itsenäisiä teoksia, mutta niillä on yhteys. Ulkona oleva teos kurkottaa kohti kevättä, sisäpihalla olevassa installaatiossa on puolestaan häivähdys pimeyttä. Oma henkilökohtainen suosikkini on Valon paino - olisin voinut jäädä katsomaan teosta ikuisuuden! Mielestäni on nerokasta sijoittaa teos sisäpihalle, museokaupan yläpuolelle.

How does light inspire you? How do you feel about this kind of environmental art?

Miten valo inspiroi sinua? Mitä mieltä olet tilataiteesta?

What's your opinion?

  1. Some pieces of art soar past my head metaphorically, I think this one is one of them.
