Kaisaniemi Botanic Garden

Helsinki, 3 degrees

A garden to walk in and immensity to dream in--what more could he ask? A few flowers at his feet and above him the stars.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but only in the Nordic countries we talk about not merely the four seasons of the year, but also the seasons in between the seasons (e.g. spring winter, spring summer, Indian summer, autumn winter etc.). So actually, we talk about eight seasons instead of four! I guess this is only logical since our weather conditions vary so much, depending on the season. Many of my international friends are surprised when I tell them that we in Helsinki can have +30 degrees in summer and even up to -25 in winter. At this point, I don't know what surprises them more - that it can actually be that hot in the great North, or that a Northern capital city can function even with serious minus degrees.

Tätä blogikirjoitusta kirjoittaessani huomasin, että minun käsityksen mukaan ainoastaan Pohjolassa käytämme vuodenaikojen välisiä, ns. välikausitermejä kuten kevättalvi, kevätkesä, syystalvi ym. Intiaanikesä toki on yleisesti käytetty termi, mutta muuten harvoin kuulee Pohjolan ulkopuolella puhuttavan näistä välikausista.

Having said this, on a spring winter day I took my baby girl to the tropics of Helsinki. Yes, you read right. Even during the coldest of months, there are green oases in Helsinki that never cool down. These places are some of my favorites in town; places that remind us of warmth & the green months of the year. I must add, never before have I loved the trend color of the year as much as I do this year: greenery. Even the word itself makes me smile. Therefore, Helsinki's Kaisaniemi Botanic Garden is one of my favorite spots in town.

At the Kaisaniemi Botanic Garden, built back in 1829, ten glasshouses are open to the public & offer a glimpse into the plant life of torrid deserts, humid rainforests and tropical wetlands. The collection of about 1300 plant species mainly originates from the same longitude as Finland. That means that this is an ideal place for daydreaming: one can imagine travelling south from Finland and admiring the plant worlds of different latitudes. The glasshouses present a cross-section of environments, from the scented forests of the Mediterranean to the dry savannahs and deserts of Africa and further to the lush rainforests of South Africa. In addition, a brief glimpse is given of Australia's species.

The Garden belongs to the University of Helsinki & it's one of Helsinki's most popular visitor attractions. The Garden is situated very close to the city centre, and its glasshouses and surrounding grounds offer nature lovers a unique experience all year round.

The glasshouses' biggest attraction is the Victoria cruziana (Santa Cruz water lily), which has survived the bombings of World War II and now dominates the luminous and tropical Waterlily Room. My personal favorites among the glasshouses were the Palm House, where one could see the evolution of the plant kingdom & tropical economic plants, the Waterlily Room with wetland plants & tropical economic plants, and finally the Desert Room with plants from tropical and subtropical deserts and semideserts.
