5 tips for organizing a unique first birthday

Helsinki, 19 degrees

A birth-date is a reminder to celebrate the life as well as to update the life.

About three weeks ago, my dearest daughter became a toddler. After contemplating about it for about a month's time, we decided to celebrate her first birthday at home. I'm most thankful for the people that were involved, as a girl's first birthday party is truly an event of genuine love - and I'm sure our toddler girl could feel the warmth of these events (one for relatives on her actual birthday and one on the following day for her friends) thanks to the people who attended them through their priceless presence and support. Here follow my five tips on how to make a first birthday a truly unique milestone in life.

Noin kolme viikkoa sitten tytöstämme tuli virallisesti taapero.

Photography / Valokuvaus

As I mentioned in this earlier blog post, we took some family photos for our girl's seaside-theme birthday in my childhood district of Helsinki, Munkkiniemi that is. The lovely & talented Hanna Hurtta took the breathtaking sea-themed photos. I am happy that we decided to take the photos one week prior to her actual birthday, because in this way we could share the photos on a tv screen during the birthday parties. In addition, I think it would have been impossible to fit in a photo session on her actual birthday weekend due to the parties.

Kuten mainitsin tässä aikaisemmassa blogikirjoituksessa, niin otimme perhekuvia tyttäremme meriteemaisen syntymäpäivän kunniaksi lapsuuskaupunginosassani, eli Munkassa (Helsingin Munkkiniemessä). Ihana & taitava Hanna Hurtta otti nämä kauniit merelliset kuvat. Mielestäni oli hyvä päätös ottaa valokuvat viikkoa ennen tyttäremme oikeeta syntymäpäivää. Näin pystyimme näyttämään valokuvia tv-näytöllä syntymäjuhlien aikana. Ajallisesti en myöskään usko, että olisimme ehtineet käydä ottamassa valokuvia syntymäpäiväviikonloppuna juhlien takia.

Invitation / Kutsu

To invite the guests to our girl's first seaside-theme birthday party, I made an invitation that had sea-themed watercolor figures on it as decoration. I had found the free sea-themed watercolor figures online on blogs. You can find similar ones on Pinterest here.

Meriteemaisia syntymäpäiväjuhlia varten tein kutsun, jossa oli vesivärikuvioita koristeina. Löysin maksuttomat vesivärimeriteemat blogeista. Löydät vastaavia Pinterestistä täältä.

Decoration / Koristeet

For decorating our home in the parties' sea theme, we mainly used three colors: black, white and silver. We decorated our home with garlands, banners, number balloons and other sea-themed decorations. The Meri Meri sea-themed garlands with seashells were found at local party store Pop Up Kemut, the letter banner from A Little Lovely Company through MiniOnes (see earlier blog post about it) and the simple black garland from local party store Confetti. I used small clothespins that I found in local hobby store Askarelli to hang my daughter's birthday cards on the black garland. The number balloons were from Pop Up Kemut (the bigger black one) and Confetti (the smaller silver one). The cups, plates and napkins were also from Pop Up Kemut (the ones formed as seashells) and Confetti (the silver ones). The silver streamers were found at Pop Up Kemut whereas the silver paper fans were found at Confetti.

Koristelimme kodimme meriteemaiseksi käyttämällä kolmea väriä: mustaa, valkoista ja hopeaa. Käytimme viiri- ja simpukkanauhoja, kirjainnauhoja, numero -foliopalloja ja muita koristeita. Meriteemaiset Meri Meri -simpukkanauhat löysin Pop Up Kemuista kun taas A Little Lovely Company -kirjainnauhan sain MiniOnesilta (esittely tässä blogikirjoituksessa). Hopeinen serpentiini löytyi Pop Up Kemuista kun taas hopeiset viuhkapaperikoristeet löytyivät Confettista.

I used A Little Lovely Company's Light Box that I bought from lifestyle shop Emma's and Mama's to make a "Happy birthday Felicia" light sign. You can find the source of these ideas and more inspiration for a first sea-themed birthday on my Pinterest board here. I'll write about the polaroid wall in an upcoming blog post.

Tein "Happy birthday Felicia" -valokyltin tarjoilupöydälle käyttämällä A Little Lovely Companyn Light Boxia, jonka ostin Emma's and Mama'silta. Löydät näiden ideoiden lähteet ja muuta lasten syntymäpäiväinspiraatiota tästä Pinterest -taulustani. Tulen kirjoittamaan juhlien polaroid-seinästä tulevassa blogikirjoituksessa.

Food / Tarjoilut

The stars of the birthday parties were without a doubt the cakes: the stunning Moomin (Snork Maiden) cake on my daughter's actual birthday, and the smoothie cake during her second party for her friends. They were both made by my friend who runs a small cake company called Söt. However, concerning the rest of the food, we did receive some help from a family member: the cute fruit shark was made by my dear sister. We are forever grateful for the help we received from her! I made some fishy sandwich cakes in baby food jars and crab-formed fish-filled croissants. There was also plenty of sea-themed fruit, cookies, fruit smoothies and macarons on display. Most of the ideas were found on Pinterest

Memorable activities / Aktiviteetit

As icing on the cake we displayed photos of our daughter's first year on a tv screen during the birthday parties. The photos were a great topic for discussion. We also had a children's play pool / ball pit (without water though) that I had found at Etola at the parties. It was one of my birthday gifts to her and it was a hit! The Hape wooden swing boat / boat rocker that you also see in the photos of this blog post was also a birthday gift from Kärkkäinen to our girl and all the party guests enjoyed it! At a first birthday party, this was enough as program! To finalize the experience, we will now send out thank you cards (photos of our girl with a personal message) to the guests.

What makes a perfect first birthday party in your opinion? Did we miss something crucial?

Mikä tekee ensimmäisistä syntymäpäiväjuhlista täydelliset? Puuttuiko mielestäsi juhlastamme jotain?

What's your opinion?

    1. I don't think anybody remembers one's first birthday, but the people in your life usually tell you about it, and it's nice to see how it was from photos and such.

  3. hehe, I can't say how a perfect first birthday party should look like. I guess we'll get to know next year :) but yours seems to perfect or at least very close to it since it seems to have everything a child's party needs: guests, decorations, activities and of course FOOD. gosh how I would love to have those croissants and cakes right now, haha. by the way, what about the presents? did you say what you need or did everyone bring whatever they wanted?

    1. I can write another blog post about the presents, thank you for the hint! Since the birthday had a sea-theme, it helped some of the guests to give sea-themed presents. Others asked us what we needed, and the rest just brought whatever they wanted :) A happy mix of things, I would say. But I'll write about it in an upcoming post!
